First Look at Arts High School
After going to the Arts High School I can not wait to go back to begin my observations of the classrooms that I have with my assigned teacher. When I first walked into the school I did not know what to think because the first thing I saw was metal detectors and a security guard. But after seeing the students singing and hearing from the people that are in charge of the school it had totally changed my ideas that I had before coming into the school. It made me feel like everyday when each of the students come into the school they enter a world that is filled with oppurtunities for each of the students talents that is completely different from the world they have outside of school that for some of them is filled with harsh and difficult times that a teenager with there talent should not have to deal with. I am anxiously awaiting to return to the school and meet some of the students and teachers that get to experience an environment like Arts High School on a daily basis.

I like what you said about the Arts High School students - "they enter a world that is filled with opportunities". It is true. Good public education does make a difference in children's and teenagers' lives, and being able to attend this great school is a blessing. I guess it could be seen as a way for students to escape from reality , but at the same time it represents hope of better days to come for Newark and other urban areas.
I believe that if these students receive quality education and adults expect a lot from them, they will develop their skills and perform to their full potential. When they graduate, they will continue with their higher education and careers and be successful, or maybe shine as artists. In either case, they will make us proud.
Moreover, these educated and talented individuals are the proof that it is wrong to label residents of urban communities as bad, dangerous, or hopeless. Kids from urban communities are nice, smart and talented; all they need is people who care about them and the tools to succeed.
I think a lot of people held your same thoughts and feelings towards the Arts High School. Due to the atmosphere, the stereotypes, and the metal detectors and security guards, many people did not know what to expect. I agree with Future Spanish Teacher. What you said about students and how "everyday when each of the students come into the school they enter a world that is filled with oppurtunities" really stood out to me. I think that there are many oppotunities in Arts High which is what makes it so special given that it is in the middle of Newark which gets a lot of negative attention especially when it comes to the school systems. I think that this can be looked at from a broader perspective too in that many schools can be filled with opportunities for their students.
